Hornbills

Hornbills.

I think it was Ernest Hemmingway who said "There is not a day that went by when I woke up in Africa and I'm wasn't truly happy". Well Ernest clearly never got woken up at 4.50am on his Africa Gap year by a pair of Hornbills crowing outside his window. Imagine a Crow with a banana nailed to its face and then give it an ear splitting whining noise like a pissed of frightened cat. That is a Hornbill. Years of evolution has not been kind to these things, imagine trying to fly with a huge downward curving banana beak and you can imagine how these things travel – Pretty much like I do in a plane to be fair, must be something to do with my nose also. The meaning of their name I am unsure of – either because of their beak being mistaken for some kind of Horn (most likely) or my theory is that they sound like a fucking fog horn.

Gap year Thailand – don’t hold back…just go…

For people interested in a gap year Thailand, there is a new website http://www.gapyearthailand.info/

This aims to be a collection of useful information and tips for taking a gap year thailand.

Thailand is an increasingly popular place to take a gap year or even just go backpacking. Partly due to the fact that the main gateway in to asia is Bangkok making travel in to thailand very accessible and cheap. Once the gap year takers are in Thailand, their travel budget stretches much further too, due to thte low cost and high standards of living in Thailand.

People head out there for different reasons, for some the allure of pristine beaches is a big free, others search out incredible weather and headonistic night life. Other active people are attracted to Thailand as it offers exciting sports such as Thailand Muay thai Kick boxing training, and out of this world diving.

Not every one is really active however, building up a sweat in the tropics is easy enough with out running around, so some people like to while away their days watching the sun set with a cheap cocktail served in a bucket loaded with loopy juice (Thai Red Bull and Samsong whiskey). Not that we would blame them, the sun setting into the sea is incredible. A huge orange glowing fireball just out of reach, slowly bringing the evenings spectacular festivities of fireshows and revellers hitting the beach to party is enough to get anyone started.

Thailand is a year round destination, not that it is sunny all the time… the monsoon season can bring intermittent strong rain storms, but fear not, when one side of the country is wet, the other is dry, so you are only a days travel away from finding those gorgeous hot sandy beaches, sheltered with paradise island coconut trees, lazily drooping onto the beach.

If you have never been to thailand, you have much to look forward too, if you have already been, like many others you are sure to return, and will know exactly what I am talking about. They say you never really leave the land of the smiles, no other country has as greater impact on your soul than spending your gap year in thailand. Once you do leave there will always be a place in your heart, filled with fond memories of this magical country.

Fitness Vacations and fitness holidays from Xtreme Gap

fitness vacations

Looking for a fitness vacation with a difference? Many people are. Bored with grinding their butts of at a gym, they are looking for new way to get in shape and take a Fitness Vacation.

As any good fitness holiday should the fitness holidays available through Xtreme Gap year provide lots of excitement fun and adventure at the same time as getting you in shape. How fit you can get, as always depends on personal effort, but considering some of the fun activities on offer, motivation comes easy.

Take the fitness boot camp in Thailand, for example. Not only do you have dedicated personal trainers overseeing your fitness regime, but you also stay 10 minutes from the beach surrounded by lush Thai jungle.

Then there are the Martial arts fitness vacation options. The martial arts are in general non contact, and not dangerous, but incredible for your fitness levels and health. Muay Thai training is one of the most fitness intensive martial arts available as is Learning kung Fu in china.

If your idea of a fitness vacation is more about getting wet and having great fun in the process some of the best options are surfing. Surfing works all your muscle groups and is a seriously good work out in itself. No wonder all these surfer dudes have chissled abs and bodies to die for. With Xtreme Gap you can learn to surf in Australia, south Africa or Brazil (to name a few) and get a body worthy of any stroll along the beach.

A low impact fitness vacation, that is increasingly popular is yoga. Set on a tropical paradise Island the Xtreme Gap yoga retreat is perfect for stretching your way into shape in between massages and gorgeous cheap Thai meals.

Finally diving is also an option when considering a low impact fitness vacation. Whilst it may seem unlikely that floating along under water prodices fitness benefits, when you consider the breathing, and cardio impact of repeated dives undertaken on a Divemaster course, the fitness benefits start to show.

Of course a lot of fitness benefits depend on the amount of time and effort put into achieving the goal, but then not everything is easy, at least with Xtreme gap's fitness vacations, the majority of the work load it taken care of.
